On this day in 1787, the United States Constitution – our foundational commitment to our nation’s rights and freedoms- was signed. Constitution Day is not only a celebration of our history, but also a call to action for all of us to Speak out and Show up! – to assert our commitment to the Rule of Law.
And in recognizing the fundamental rights of American democracy, we of course must note the many amendments that granted all of us the right to vote:
- The 15th Amendment prohibits the abridgment of citizens’ right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
- The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote.
- The 24th Amendment prohibits the government from imposing poll taxes to vote.
- The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age, permitting citizens over 18 to vote.
Today, we are reminded of the life, liberty, freedom and prosperity the Constitution sought to give us, and also reminded that we still have a lot of work to do to protect and defend those rights. Celebrate the document that empowers your voice by getting out there and participating!
