Kathy Boockvar recently spoke with Governing about the ways artificial intelligence may impact our 2024 election cycle, and some efforts by experts to strengthen public awareness and combat risks to the public.
Boockvar noted her concern over the potential use of AI to create what sounds just like an interactive human conversation providing false information to voters, and how this could be used as a “direct interference with the time, place, and manner of voting.”
The Brennan Center, The Elections Group, and the Institute for the Future shared with Governing a comprehensive guide they created called How Election Officials Can Identify, Prepare for, and Respond to AI Threats, to combat some of the risks at issue and provide support to election officials. This guide includes a scenario planner to describe AI threats and provide steps that election officials can take to mitigate them; identifies and explains what types of threats may appear; and offers scenarios and tabletop exercises to help officials prepare for how these threats may play out and mitigations may be needed.
