Election denialism has staying power even after Trump’s win

Though widespread claims of voter fraud have quieted some because President-Elect Trump won the election, the years of casting doubt on our election processes have had significant impact. Allegations, rumors, disputes, and disinformation campaigns continue, especially in swing states, and the public generally does not understand all the election security processes and guardrails that go into certifying an election.  

In addition to the extensive and deliberate efforts to tear down faith in our elections, Boockvar noted that the practice of news outlets “calling” elections has damaged public understanding of how ballots are counted and how and when elections are certified. “People think that when the Associated Press calls an election or Decision Desk calls an election, that that has any official relevance, and it has none,” she said. “The Associated Press and others ‘calling’ of elections exist solely for the purpose of feeding people’s need for quick answers to a process that is not designed to be quick for good reasons.” In order to make sure our election results are accurate, following Election Day election officials complete thorough and public canvasses, reconciliations, and audits, must allow any legal challenges to play out, and involve bipartisan oversight and certification.
