Election officials in the US face daunting challenges in 2024. And Congress isn’t coming to help

Kathy Boockvar spoke with AP News about the importance of federal funding for elections and sufficient resources to ensure safe and secure elections. She shared insights into why we should be investing in elections over a longer term so election officials can plan for their infrastructure needs ahead of time. She contrasted the approximately $400 million in federal HAVA grants allocated in 2020 with the $75 million allocated in 2022.  

“Los Angeles elections alone costs $75 million,” said Boockvar. “I don’t think election officials have had expectations of $400 million. People have hoped for $75 million, and it’s unclear whether even that will come.”
