Kathy Boockvar spoke with USA Today about the dismissal of the frivolous federal case filed by six Pennsylvania GOP congressmen who sought to invalidate tens of thousands of military and overseas voters’ ballots. Filed decades after the relevant law was enacted, and weeks and months after voting had already been in process for military and overseas voters, the judge rejected the claims as unfounded and untimely. State officials defended the process, representing the protocols and safeguards that had been in place for years.
Boockvar, former Pennsylvania secretary of state, pointed out that the processes in place for military and overseas voters recognize the additional challenges that troops, their families and other overseas Americans face when trying to cast a ballot. Unlike some states, the commonwealth does not allow these individuals to vote electronically, she noted. She also called out the fact that these cases have been brought solely in swing states — and years since the passage of the relevant laws — exposing the partisan motives at play.
“It’s a very unfortunate situation that we find ourselves in a moment in time where U.S. citizens’ fundamental right to vote has become a political football,” Boockvar said. “This is not who we are. We are better than this.”
