How U.S. Elections Work

NCSL Brief: Election Administration at State and Local Levels

The National Conference of State Legislatures created this Brief giving an overview of election administration at the state and local levels. It describes the decentralized election administration system in this country; the primary roles of local officials carrying out the majority of functions of running an election, and also the roles of state and federal government. It also explains that no two states administer elections in exactly the same way, and quite a bit of variation exists even within states.
