Athena Strategies President Kathy Boockvar was recently interviewed by NPR about election misinformation and our ability to counter it as we head into the 2024 election. She discussed resources that were available during and after the 2020 election to explain and debunk inaccurate and false election claims, including a CISA initiative called Rumor Control, and how these resources have been limited due to challenges over the last few years.
She also expressed concern about the manner in which many social media platforms are rolling back their efforts to flag and remove demonstrably false information, and how that may impact the 2024 election. “If they’re taking a step back, or 10 steps back… We’re basically empowering the disinformation to spread,” she said.
